Whelan has developed a believable American accent for roles, but the Farrellys, sensing they found their temptress, were more than happy to allow Whelan to audition in her native accent. The original Hall Pass script was devised by American screenwriter Pete Jones in and the Farrelly brothers instantly loved the story about happily married men Rick and best mate Fred who impulsively check out other women.
Rick's wife Jenna Fischer , upset about his wandering eye, decides to give him a hall pass, allowing seven days of freedom from marriage. If Rick wants to have sex with women, he is welcome to do so. Fred's wife Christina Applegate is not as willing to hand out the hall pass, but changes her mind when Fred has an embarrassing brush with the law.
The idea of a hall pass makes an interesting storyline for a comedy, however Whelan is not so sure if married couples should try it in real life because it crosses the line. The Farrellys and Wilson, who will be travelling to Australia this week to promote Hall Pass and attend the Australian premiere, also have their doubts about the merits of a hall pass, but they are certain they made the right decision in casting Whelan.
They feared the character of Leigh would be disliked by audiences, but Whelan managed to avert that. Whelan gets Pass to stardom.
