I thought so. In one his wife Laura Allen survived and in the other his son Dylan Minnette did. Which could possibly be a dream when both seem so real? One of the strongest elements on display throughout both of the first two episodes is the acting.
With an exceptional performance from Jason Isaacs at the centre and a cast full of other compelling actors, this is definitely not an area that Awake will find itself having any problems in. As somebody who writes about television, I have ended up watching rather a lot of pilots over the past few years. Something that I have come to learn is that they often exhibit a fairly similar set of irritating traits designed to ease an audience into the story. Awake does this too, but it manages to do it in a way that feels natural and interesting.
The exposition is largely delivered in the scenes where Britten is visiting a psychiatrist a different one in each reality and the premise is effortlessly simple. The pilot episode itself is directed by David Slade, who is best known for his work on film although he has also directed one episode of Breaking Bad.
The episode certainly does have a cinematic quality and it makes masterful use of colour as more than mere symbolism. Each separate reality looks as though it is shot through a different filter and the colour palette is noticeably different between the two. Not talk to her so she can concentrate, please. Then, they said the Earth was round Noah : The Earth is round.
Noah : Science proves it. Dodge : [laughs] Science? And who understands the science, huh? Jill : [Matilda looks back at Dodge] Eyes on the road, please. Dodge : Enough people talk about something, right? Then they put it in the books, and then the book becomes fact.
Then it's settled. Then no one understands it anymore, no one even talks about it anymore. Fuck, this is why we gotta burn the books man. Matilda : [Gripping the steering wheel] He said the F-word. Jill : I know. Please shut up. Dodge : You know, my grandmama, you know what she used to tell me? That all the world's problems could disappear in one generation if every kid grew up forgetting all the shit they were taught, the shit that doesn't make sense, but you're taught it enough times you believe it.

Jennifer Jason Leigh Dr. Later, the narrative picks up at a point where Britten has come to terms with his peculiar predicament, and is even reasonably sanguine about it. As refreshing as it is to find a US network drama willing to trust in the intelligence of its audience, the lacklustre crime procedural element sits rather at odds with the Inception -lite throughline; both the murders Britten investigates in this episode register on the level of a much more generic show.
